Burke County’s largest city is Morganton, home to just over 16 thousand residents. Morganton has become a cultural arts hub in the foothills with potters, painters, textile artists, award-winning craft breweries, and more. The town also has a greenway trail system along the Catawba River and the Fonta Flora trail. The town is affectionately dubbed “Nature’s Playground” due to its variety of ways for residents and visitors to enjoy and connect with nature in a variety of ways.
The western campus of the NC School of Science and Mathematics opens for its first residential class of 300 students in 2022.
In addition to many economic growth factors, Morganton enjoys a large amount of tourism thanks to its proximity to Asheville and Charlotte.
